The Soft Edge of Midnight
by Stella Price
Illori Swain is resigned to wither her life away in loneliness. A horrible and lengthily captivity in Africa with Belial, a fallen angel renegade, where he has used her powers to keep himself hidden from his lord and master has left Illori wanting. As a unicorn, she possesses the powers of premonition and luck, although she has never been lucky. All her life she has wanted a mate. A stallion in his prime could, and would, support as many as ten mares, and this is what she desires above all else. Female unicorns can support their own life force only as long as they stay pure and untouched. A virgin unicorn of her age is unheard of and undocumented.
Karsten Morris is a royal heir unable to return to his own plane of existence because the Fey closed the portals to the Glimmer, and the chance of finding any mate is slim to none. So he did what anyone would have done, he got a job, got a girlfriend and got numb. He isn’t sure if there is any of his kind left in the Glimmer, yet the hope of a mate, a true mate he could cherish and protect is his driving force. One day walking down a Glasgow street he smells the sweet scent of an unmated mare and follows it into a sweet shop. The attraction between them is instant. Karsten wants to get her alone so he can mark her as his. They go to her apartment but before he can mark her they are interrupted by Sammael who is hired by Lucifer to find her and kill her. They make their escape but there is another call from Nybras who wants Sammael’s job and sets outs to capture Illori and take her to his master so he can get his talents noticed.
Karsten and Sammael must join forces in order to get Illori back.
This is the first book I have read of Stella and Audra and I was hooked from the beginning. This tale is about Karsten and Illori and their fight to get back to their home in the Glimmer so they can have a future together. You are drawn into the book with the characters that are both light and dark. The dark forces are out there to keep the unicorns apart. You are sucked into the story which includes magic, humor, as well as some fantastic and incredible sex. You get to know the characters of the fallen and how they thrive on deceit, and create chaos among everyone. You learn of their fears, wants, and motivations and begin to become fascinated by them. You get to picture what the Glimmer looks like and are just waiting for the unicorns to make it home. I will be looking forward to reading more about the Keepers of Twilight Series and seeing what these Fallen Angels are up to.
