A Knight’s Vow
by Lindsay Townsend

Guillelm de la Rochelle is back from fighting in the crusades, and is stunned to find Alyson entrenched in his father’s ancestral castle and that she was betrothed to his father before he died. Remembering his meeting with Sir Henry where he was told that she had spoken of a desire to enter the church as a nun and because of him had almost driven the noble aim from her head. He was too rash and wild and would leave Alyson a widow within six months. Sir Henry told Guillelm that he could not have her and not to ask again.

Alyson of Olverton has dreamed of marrying a brave young knight and his name is Guillelm. His proposal has satisfied her deepest yearnings.  Her father forbade their union, causing Guillelm to set out for the Holy Land. Now seven years later, Guillelm has defied rumors of his death and returned home, having no idea that things are not the same as when he left.

Guillelm shocks them both by proposing marriage a second time, justifying that it will be easier to keep her safe if she is his bride. Neither of them knows there is an enemy in their very midst, one who won’t rest until he destroys their chance at everlasting love.

Lindsay Townsend’s first historical novel is a fantastic job. You are drawn into lives of Guillelm and Alyson where they are both wondering of the other’s love. Guillelm is afraid of being rejected and hurt again. Alyson sets out to seduce her husband wanting to gain his love and trust. But it seems that every time the two of them get close together Fulk is there doing mean tricks and causing trouble between of them. He does not want Gillelum to have a life with Alyson. Finally when the two of them are able to confess their love for each other and when they come together as one it is the most delightful ecstasy.

A Knight’s Vow is a story worth reading. Lindsay Townsend has written a truly heart-warming novel about love that blossoms despite the circumstances that threaten to keep a young couple apart. The story is rich in detail, and vivid in description. This is a romance that you can instantly escape into with believable characters and plot. Townsend is one author to watch and follow if you are a fan of historical fiction.
